What Is a Digital Product Passport for Jewelry?

If you sell jewelry, you're going to hear the phrase "digital product passport" a lot over the next few years — usually from someone trying to sell you software. Here's the plain-English version: what it actually contains, and why it matters even if you never touch the European market.

A passport, not a product page

A Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a structured, verifiable digital record attached to a specific physical object. Not to a listing, not to a SKU line in your store — to that ring. Scan it and you see the piece's identity and its history: what it's made of, where it came from, what happened to it, who vouched for each fact.

The difference from a normal product description is one word: verifiable. A product page says "sterling silver" because you typed it. A passport records ".925, assayed" as an event, with a date and an issuer, so a buyer three owners from now can check it instead of trusting it.

Why it's coming whether you like it or not

The EU's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR, 2024/1781) will require Digital Product Passports for product categories, rolling out over the coming years. Textiles are first in line; other categories follow. If you sell into the EU — directly, or through Amazon EU, Etsy's EU market, or a wholesale buyer who does — this stops being optional.

But the regulation is only the deadline. The real driver is that provenance now sells. Resale platforms, insurers, and buyers increasingly want to know a piece is what it claims to be. A DPP is how you answer that at scale instead of one email at a time.

What actually goes in a jewelry DPP

For a silver piece, a useful passport records, per item:

• Material and assay — .925, with the hallmark event, not just a claim.
• Origin — where and by whom it was made.
• Weight — and here we're precise: the weight in our passports is measured on a real scale after finishing, not estimated from the CAD.
• Lifecycle events — cast, finished, verified, shipped, and — if it's ever resold — a resale event that extends the lineage.

One honesty note that separates a real passport from a marketing badge: every fact carries its level of proof and its issuer — declared, attested, verified, or measured. A good passport shows the difference instead of dressing a claim up as a lab result.
