How to Measure Your Ring Size at Home: The Practical Guide

One of the biggest fears when buying a ring online is getting the wrong size. But measuring correctly from home is simpler than it seems — and with the two methods we explain here, you can find your exact size in less than five minutes.

What You Need to Know First

Ring sizes are expressed in different systems depending on the country. In Mexico and the United States, a number from 3 to 15 is used, where each number corresponds to a ring's internal circumference in millimeters. In Europe, the perimeter in millimeters is used directly (for example, size 52 = 52 mm circumference).

At Arte Taxco, we use the MX/US system as it is the most familiar to our customers, but we always include the conversion to EU and measurements in millimeters so you can verify.

Method 1: With Paper (The Most Accurate)

This method directly measures the finger that will wear the ring.

Materials: a strip of paper about 10 cm long and 0.5 cm wide, a pen, scissors, and a ruler.

Steps:

1. Cut the strip of paper.
2. Wrap it around the base of the finger you will wear the ring on. Adjust it so it's firm but can slide off easily — the ring should be able to be removed, not just put on.
3. Mark with the pen the exact point where the two ends overlap.
4. Unroll the paper and measure the distance from the beginning to the mark. That is the finger circumference in millimeters.
5. Find that measurement in the "Perimeter" column of the size chart.

Important Tip: Measure at the end of the day, when your finger is at its largest volume. Fingers contract with cold and swell with heat. The measurement at night at room temperature is the most representative for everyday wear.

Method 2: With an Existing Ring

If you already have a ring that fits well on that finger, you can use it to measure.

Materials: the ring and a millimeter ruler.

Steps:

1. Place the ring on the ruler.
2. Measure the internal diameter — from inner edge to inner edge, passing through the center of the hole.
3. Write down that measurement in millimeters.
4. Find that measurement in the "Diameter" column of the chart.

What to Do if You Are Between Two Sizes

If your measurement falls exactly between two sizes, choose the larger one. The reason is practical: a slightly large ring can be adjusted with a sizing insert (available at jewelers), but a ring that doesn't fit on your finger has no easy solution.

The exception is wide bands (7 mm or more). These tend to feel tighter than thin bands of the same size because they have more contact surface with the finger. If you are buying a wide band and are unsure between sizes, go up a full size.

If the Ring is a Gift

The classic challenge: you want to surprise someone but don't know their size.

Option A: Borrow a ring that person wears and measure the inner diameter with a ruler.

Option B: If you can measure their finger while they sleep (yes, it works), use the paper method.
